FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly Remake Arrives on PC in 2026
KOEI Tecmo has officially revealed that FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is in development and will release on PC in early 2026. A debut trailer accompanied the announcement, confirming a modern reimagining of the cult-classic horror title.
Originally released in 2003, Crimson Butterfly is often considered the highlight of the FATAL FRAME franchise. The game follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura, who return to a childhood stream only to be drawn into a cursed village where spirits and rituals dominate the night. When Mayu is lured away by a red butterfly, Mio must search for her, relying on the Camera Obscura to fend off hostile spirits and uncover the truth behind a forbidden ritual.
The remake promises a complete overhaul of the original, featuring enhanced graphics, improved audio, and updated gameplay systems. Controls have been redesigned to fit modern standards, offering smoother exploration and combat. The Camera Obscura will return as the central mechanic, now updated to heighten both exploration tension and ghost battles.
