Capcom Might Skip RE1 Remake in Favor of Zero and Code Veronica

Capcom reportedly has no immediate plans to remake the original Resident Evil — despite the critical and commercial success of the RE2 and RE4 remakes. Instead, the studio’s attention may be shifting to two less mainstream entries in the franchise: Resident Evil Zero and Code Veronica.

The update comes from industry insider Dusk Golem, who responded on social media to speculation about Capcom’s next remake. When asked why the studio would prioritize RE Zero over the 1996 original, he pointed to an internal advantage: several developers from the original RE Zero team — including its game director and producer — still work at Capcom and are interested in revisiting the title.

He also recalled that Capcom previously surveyed fans, and Zero and Code Veronica were among the most requested games for future remakes.

Other likely reasons for Capcom's direction include:

  • A smaller scope compared to RE4, making development more feasible
  • Lower expectations, reducing financial risk in case the remake underperforms

That said, fans remain puzzled about Capcom's cautious approach — especially given the stellar track record of their recent remakes.

Importantly, a Resident Evil 1 remake hasn’t been completely ruled out. According to Dusk Golem, Capcom might simply be waiting for the right timing, when the project could capture maximum community interest.
