Bethesda just announced that over 4 million players have already jumped into Cyrodiil in less than five days since launch. That’s a wild number, even for a franchise as massive as The Elder Scrolls — and it proves that even nearly two decades later, Oblivion’s magic still hits hard.

The studio shared their excitement with players online, saying:

"We are so grateful to the over 4 million of you that have already ventured into Cyrodiil with Oblivion Remastered. Thank you!"

Pretty wholesome stuff, honestly.

Why Oblivion Was (And Is) So Special

If you're somehow new to the party: when The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion dropped back in 2006, it was a game-changer. At the time, Oblivion was the gold standard for open-world RPGs — a massive, detailed world where you could pretty much go wherever you wanted, join factions, fight demons from another dimension, and accidentally punch an NPC in the face, triggering an all-out city brawl.

The game introduced groundbreaking AI with its "Radiant AI" system, where NPCs had their own little lives, and it looked stunning thanks to the then-new Xbox 360 hardware and powerful PCs of the time. It wasn’t just a technical flex — Oblivion helped shape modern open-world games. Everything from Skyrim to The Witcher 3 owes a little something to Cyrodiil.

And the memes? Timeless. ("STOP! You violated the law!" still lives rent-free in everyone's heads.)

The Remaster: A New Era for Cyrodiil

Fast forward to 2025, and Oblivion Remastered isn’t just some lazy texture swap. The game is a full ground-up remake built in Unreal Engine 5. That means full 4K visuals, 60 FPS performance, and some seriously stunning lighting and detail that actually make the world feel alive again, instead of like a weird dream you vaguely remember from 2007.

Interestingly, the remaster wasn’t done solely by Bethesda. Virtuos' Paris studio — a veteran support and porting company — handled most of the work, under Bethesda’s supervision. And honestly? They crushed it. The remaster somehow captures the heart of the original while smoothing over a lot of its jankier bits.

A few fun facts about the project:

  • It started quietly over three years ago but was kept super low-key until launch.
  • Bethesda and Virtuos rebuilt the entire world in Unreal, recreating assets instead of just porting them.
  • Official mod support isn’t a thing yet — but that hasn’t stopped the community from pumping out over 100 mods already, tweaking everything from UI improvements to wild new spells and armor sets.

There's already a speedrun community popping up for it, too, because, of course, there is.

Why It’s a Hit (Again)

First, nostalgia is a hell of a drug. For a lot of players, Oblivion wasn’t just a game; it was the game they sank hundreds of hours into growing up. Seeing it now with modern graphics but the same quirky soul is like time-traveling to a better, weirder era.

Second, the timing is just perfect. With The Elder Scrolls VI still feeling like a distant mirage, and Skyrim having been re-released more times than anyone can count, players were starving for a different flavor of Tamriel.

And third? It's just really, really good. The world design holds up, the writing is still bizarrely charming (even when it’s super awkward), and the main quest and side missions like the Dark Brotherhood assassinations are still some of the best in the series.

Oblivion Remastered Issues

  • The Duplicate Items Glitch is still very much alive and well. If you're feeling a little chaotic, you can still cheese your way to infinite gold and gear — and there’s already a handy guide if you need it.
  • Oblivion’s leveling system is still weird. (Yes, if you level "wrong," enemies will scale with you and become godlike.)
  • Despite the polish, it’s still an Elder Scrolls game, meaning you will encounter occasional bugs, weird NPC pathfinding, and physics that go absolutely feral sometimes.

But honestly? That’s part of the charm. Would it even be Oblivion without some occasional ridiculousness?

Magic Hour, Nostalgic Note

With the overwhelming success of the remaster, it’s hard not to wonder: is Bethesda cooking up more classic revivals? There’s been no official word on a Morrowind Remaster yet, but if Oblivion Remastered’s numbers stay this strong, it wouldn’t be surprising if Vvardenfell gets the Unreal Engine 5 treatment someday.

And if nothing else, it shows there’s still a massive, hungry audience for Elder Scrolls content. TES6 might still be a few years away, but Cyrodiil’s open arms (and terrible voice acting) are more than enough to keep us busy in the meantime.

"Oblivion isn't just back — it's better than ever."

Time to save the world... or, you know, get arrested for accidentally stealing a fork.
