Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Has Reached 500,000 Copies Sold

If you're a fan of the gaming industry, you may have noticed a new hit climbing the charts in recent days — Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 by Sandfall Interactive. Released on April 24, 2025, this RPG has already surpassed 500,000 copies sold, according to the studio's announcement.

The game launched on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, giving players a wide choice of platforms. Despite releasing alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 managed to impress fans and continues to build momentum. When Oblivion dropped, Clair Obscur's publisher, Kepler Interactive, even jokingly compared the situation to "Barbenheimer." As it turns out, the comparison was quite fitting.

As mentioned above, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is developed by Sandfall Interactive, a relatively new studio. In terms of gameplay, it’s a classic turn-based RPG inspired by titles like Final Fantasy and Persona. The story follows a crew of explorers in a fractured, post-apocalyptic world where each year a giant entity called The Paintress carves a new number and erases everyone older than that number. It’s a highly original premise. Thus, the members of Expedition 33, the next in line, have one goal in mind: travel to the ends of the continent and destroy The Paintress to save everyone.

As for reception, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has been warmly received, ranking 92nd on Metacritic and 91st on OpenCritic, placing it alongside Split Fiction and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 as one of the most successful games of the year.
