Capcom Announces Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Remaster for 2025

Capcom closed its latest Spotlight event with an exciting reveal: Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny is getting a long-awaited remaster. Originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2002, the game received positive reviews and performed well in sales. However, for decades, it remained exclusive to the PS2, with no indication that Capcom had plans for a remaster—until now.

A Long-Awaited Return

In 2018, Capcom released a remastered version of Onimusha: Warlords, making the original game accessible on modern hardware. However, unofficial reports suggested that the remaster did not perform well commercially, leading many to believe that the series' other entries would never receive similar treatment. As a result, fans assumed the Onimusha franchise was effectively dormant.

Now, seven years later, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny is finally getting its remaster. Capcom unveiled the project as the closing announcement of its Spotlight event, confirming a release window of 2025. While no exact date has been provided, the remaster will be available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch. It will also be playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X via backward compatibility, though it will not receive dedicated next-gen versions.

What to Expect from the Remaster

Like its predecessor, Onimusha 2's remaster won’t introduce major content additions or significant gameplay upgrades. Instead, it will focus on improving the visuals with a high-definition makeover while maintaining the core experience. This announcement has sparked speculation that additional Onimusha titles might also receive remasters in the future, though Capcom has not confirmed anything beyond Onimusha 2 at this time.

The Future of Onimusha

Despite this long-overdue remaster, much of the Onimusha franchise remains stuck on older hardware. Following Onimusha 2, Capcom released Onimusha Tactics on the Game Boy Advance, the PS2 fighting game spin-off Onimusha Blade Warriors, and the critically acclaimed sequel Onimusha 3: Demon Siege. The series also saw Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams in 2006, which earned high praise but has yet to see a modern re-release.

While it remains unclear if any other classic Onimusha games will receive remasters, Capcom has officially confirmed a brand-new entry in the series. Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch in 2026, marking the first entirely new installment in the franchise in 20 years. Fans eager for more Onimusha content finally have something to look forward to.
