Confirms Simu Liu: Sleeping Dogs Movie in the Works
It’s not every day that major gaming or movie news breaks in the most casual way possible. But today, the long-rumored Sleeping Dogs movie got an unexpected confirmation straight from a Hollywood star.
Simu Liu, best known for his role in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has revealed that he is actively working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen. This revelation came not through an official announcement or a press release, but rather via a direct Twitter exchange.
It all started when a Twitter user named Zengames44 expressed interest in a Sleeping Dogs sequel and tagged Liu, asking, “Are you Wei?” Liu’s response was short but significant: “Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen!”
Fans of the 2012 open-world action game have long hoped for a movie adaptation. A project starring martial arts legend Donnie Yen had been in development for years, but Yen recently revealed that it was no longer moving forward. Now, with Liu involved, the possibility of a Sleeping Dogs film seems more tangible than ever.
Liu’s enthusiasm for the project is not new. In a 2021 Reddit AMA, when asked which game adaptation he’d most want to star in, he responded, “Sleeping Dogs was pretty lit.” His latest statement suggests that he may finally get his wish—and fans might get the adaptation they’ve been waiting for.
In a follow-up tweet, Liu also hinted at his interest in seeing a new Sleeping Dogs game alongside the movie. While United Front Games, the original developers, shut down in 2016, the game remains a cult favorite, and a film adaptation could be just what’s needed to reignite interest in the franchise.
While no official details about production, casting, or release dates have been shared yet, Liu’s confirmation is enough to get fans excited. Whether he steps into the role of Wei Shen himself or takes on another character, Sleeping Dogs enthusiasts will be eagerly awaiting further updates on this long-awaited project.
