Unleashing Cosmic Creativity: Astroneer Mod Transforms Starfield's Shipbuilding with Dynamic Quests and Immersive Challenges
A recent Starfield mod has given new life to the game's shipbuilding mechanics, transforming players into spacecraft designers through an elaborate and ongoing questline. This mod directly addresses a common fan complaint about the underutilization of the ship builder feature in Starfield.
Despite offering an extensive ship-building and customization system, Starfield originally didn't compel players to engage with it. Some fans appreciated this decision, aligning it with the game's sandbox nature, asserting their disinterest in custom spacecraft tinkering. On the other hand, critics pointed out the lack of concrete incentives for ship creation and customization, citing it as an example of the game's disjointed design.
The recently released mod, titled "Astroneer: Become a Starship Designer", aims to tackle these concerns. Developed by Nexus Mods user CodeGangsta, this ambitious project introduces a new system of radiant quests that require players to assemble a diverse array of spacecraft. Completion of these quests earns players XP, monetary rewards, and Salvage resources, which can be utilized for over two dozen new Research Projects.
Features of the Astroneer: Become a Starship Designer Starfield Mod
- Various ship contracts to undertake.
- Build Explorers, Fighters, Haulers, Luxury ships, and Interceptors.
- Each mission type comes with unique requirements and challenges.
- Aria Collins, a fully voiced NPC guide and collaborator.
- Detailed progression system.
- Completion of contracts yields XP, Credits, and Salvage rewards.
- Salvage is used for over 25 new research projects, unlocking new ship parts, discounts from Aria, and global upgrades.
- New space encounters featuring player-built ships.
Astroneer quests are acquired from Mission Boards, similar to other procedurally generated tasks in Starfield. The mechanic is implemented with thoughtful polish, featuring a fully voiced NPC named Aria Collins, who serves as both the player's guide and collaborator in their engineering pursuits. The ships designed and delivered as part of these missions can later be encountered in outer space, adding an immersive and consequential dimension to the activity.
It's important to note that Astroneer works only with the Steam version of Starfield and requires the Plugins.txt Enabler mod to function. Unfortunately, this makes the PC Game Pass version of Starfield incompatible with Astroneer and many other mods. Although potential workarounds exist, none have been attempted for the Microsoft Store executable, distributed to Xbox Game Pass subscribers on PC.
Nevertheless, Astroneer is a significant addition to the growing collection of outstanding Starfield mods that have emerged online since the RPG's launch in September. With the official modding tools set to release in early 2024, more user-created content is anticipated to follow.
