Fallout 4's Beloved Companion, Drinkin' Buddy, Holds Promise for Fallout 5
As fans eagerly anticipate Fallout 5, one lesser-known but cherished character from Fallout 4 could hold the key to preserving the essence of the series. Fallout 4 was a standout in Bethesda's roster of RPGs, renowned for its vast array of quests and immersive narrative. Among the side quests that left a lasting impact on players was "Trouble Brewin'," centered around the unassuming Hotel Rexford in Goodneighbor.
In this endearing quest, players meet Rufus Rubins, the local handyman, who tasks them with retrieving a modified Protectron robot known as Drinkin' Buddy. Once activated, Drinkin' Buddy reveals himself as a walking brewery and beverage cooler, offering players the choice to return him to Rufus or keep him as a companion.
If players opt to keep Buddy, they gain access to his unique ability to craft improved "Ice Cold" versions of certain healing beverages, like Nuka Cola and Gwinnett brand beer. Additionally, Buddy's combat capabilities were boosted through a Fallout 4 update, making him a mechanically solid and entertaining companion who loves to crack corny jokes on command.
Looking ahead to Fallout 5, including characters like Drinkin' Buddy or introducing similar companions could add a touch of charm and retro-futuristic inspiration to the franchise. Among the diverse cast of Ghouls, Synths, and Protectrons, Buddy's presence stood out as a beloved non-human character.
As Bethesda is currently focused on other projects like Starfield, and with The Elder Scrolls 6 still on the horizon, Fallout 5 is likely several years away. Nevertheless, Bethesda should recognize the affection players have for well-designed non-human companions like Drinkin' Buddy, which could be a valuable addition to future Fallout titles.
