Former Astralis Representative Markus 'Kjaerbye' Kierbay retires from CS: GO
Danish renowned esportsman Markus 'Kjaerbye' Kjerbay became one of the youngest esportsmen to retire. Kjaerbye is best known for his performances under the Astralis tag and, in particular, for his victory at the first Major tournament of 2017, where he received the MVP award from HLTV, ELEAGUE Major Atlanta 2017.
The event was announced on Kjaerbye's Twitter account. There, Markus Kierbay announced that he will probably stay in CS: GO, but will continue his path as another representative of the esports fauna. So far, he cannot say for sure about what awaits him next, since the 23-year-old Dane has not made a final decision.
The last address of the ex-player Astralis on his Twitter account reads as follows:
The time has come for me to say goodbye to gaming as a professional Counter-Strike player. It is with a heavy heart I am writing this, but as of right now, I have no longer the hunger and determination it requires to compete on top level. This game has been a huge part of my life for the past 10 years, and I feel this is the time for me to look for new horizons and opportunities. Future work can be both inside and outside the game. Time will tell.
It has been a fantastic rollercoaster ride, which has given me way more than I have ever imagined when I started playing video games. To this day a big part of this adventure still feels surreal. As every other career it has brought many ups and downs – they have all made me stronger, and ultimately in many ways also shaped me into the person I am today.
I want to thank the organisations that picked me up and believed in me. Thanks to every colleague and teammate, with whom I have travelled all over the world – it has been a blast! And a big hug goes out to all my fans, family and friends, who followed me in good as well as bad times.
Thanks for everything guys!
Marcus's career began in 2014. In 2016, he joined Dignitas, with whom he later went under the banner of Astralis. The esportsman has earned the most popularity and most of the awards in the period from late 2016 to early 2018, when he played alongside gla1ve, Xyp9x, dupreeh and dev1ce. Together with them, he became the champion of ELEAGUE Major Atlanta 2017 and received the MVP award there. Until the very end, the cash prize remained the largest in the player's career, namely $ 500,000.
In 2018, Kierbay decided to move to the North, and Magisk was taken in his place, which heralded a new era for Astralis, which took place from April 2019 to April 2020. Kjaerbye tried his hand at FaZe Clan, but failed to come. The last three months of his career he spent in the Danish mix HYENAS, which was assembled from former North representatives. Just like in the case of FaZe Clan, the players failed to show excellent results.
During his career, Kjaerbye has earned ~ $ 624,000 in prize money.
