A recent study conducted by the University of Sheffield (UK)suggests that the popular competitive shooter Counter-Strike may have a positive impact on gamers' cognitive abilities.

The research found that professional and semi-professional players outperformed beginners in simple decision-making tasks by an average of 88.94 milliseconds. Using computer modeling, researchers determined that this advantage stems from faster stimulus processing and quicker execution of responses:

“In more complex tasks requiring decision-making, experts also demonstrated faster information accumulation, indicating their advantage in dynamic environments where decision speed plays a key role.”

Potential Applications Beyond Gaming

Researchers believe that these findings could have practical applications outside the gaming industry:

“The results could be used in the development of training programs for professionals working in high-stress environments where speed and accuracy in decision-making are crucial. Examples include doctors, nurses, air traffic controllers, and financial traders.”

Why Counter-Strike 2 is an Ideal Study Subject

Professor Claudia von Bastian, a cognitive psychology expert at the University of Sheffield, believes that Counter-Strike is an excellent subject for studying the impact of gaming on cognitive abilities.

“The game features a fast-paced environment that requires two teams to compete, navigate maps, and communicate effectively, engaging multiple cognitive processes. Players must quickly analyze situations, consider numerous factors, and prioritize their decisions to achieve success.”

These findings further highlight how competitive gaming can enhance cognitive skills, making esports more than just entertainment—it may also serve as a training ground for high-performance decision-making in real-world scenarios.
