Apple M6 Review Results Show What 2nm Silicon Can Do

Apple put the M6 into the Mac mini first, and reviews landed on September 21, 2026 with a single-core score that no AMD, Intel or Qualcomm chip currently matches. The part runs on TSMC's N2 process, the foundry's 2nm class silicon.

That process is the reason the chip matters outside macOS. N2 is the node AMD, Intel and Nvidia will eventually buy for PC parts, and Apple's numbers are the first public read on how well it works.

The M6 turns in 4,698 single-core points in Geekbench 6.7, according to Notebookcheck. AMD's Ryzen AI 9 HX 470, close to the top of its laptop range, manages 2,872 in the same test. Against Apple's own M5 the single-core lead comes to about 10 percent, with a comparable margin in Cinebench.

Twelve CPU cores against the M5's ten push multi-threaded output up by roughly 50 percent in a single generation. Performance per watt climbs close to 20 percent over the M5, and the M6 does the same work on half the power the Ryzen part needs.

Notebookcheck rated the Mac mini M6 at 88 percent. Apple's latest M6 carries a 12-core GPU that runs 30 to 35 percent ahead of the M5 GPU and more than 70 percent ahead of the M4's, which puts it near Intel's Arc B390 integrated graphics and well past the Radeon 890M. Cyberpunk 2077 at 1080p ultra holds 37.5 fps, Baldur's Gate 3 reaches 58.1, Assassin's Creed Shadows drops to 23. The box ships on September 22 from $899 with 16GB of memory and a 256GB SSD, idles at 2.1 watts, and peaks at 74 watts before settling near 55. Three Thunderbolt 4 ports drive up to three external displays, and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port comes standard, with a 10 Gbps version for another $100. Anyone who needs more than 32GB of memory has to move up to the M5 Pro configuration at $1,699.

I still play on PS5, so a Mac is not where my games live. Even so, this is the box I keep thinking about for vanilla Minecraft Java, which asks nothing of a GPU and everything of single-thread speed. A machine that idles at two watts and stays inaudible until you stress both the CPU and the GPU suits that better than anything I own.

The drawbacks carry over from the older Mac mini. Nothing inside can be serviced or upgraded, the Wi-Fi 7 module caps at 160 MHz and around 2 Gbps, the power button still sits underneath at the rear, and Apple covers the machine for twelve months. The base price also sits $300 above the Mac mini M4 of two years ago. Noise is not among the complaints: the fan reaches 42 dB(A) under a stress test and stays quieter than the M4 machine did. For games the harder limit is the size of the native macOS library rather than the silicon under it.

A new node used to guarantee better density, better efficiency and lower cost. Intel then sat on 14nm for close to a decade instead of moving every two years, and the company's future was in question because of it. A process now has to prove itself on arrival, which is why these results read as a data point about N2 rather than about Apple.

AMD has said the server variants of Zen 6 are already in production on N2, and if the desktop parts follow, the company will have skipped most of N3. Nvidia builds Blackwell on N4 and Rubin on N3, and with some rumours putting Rubin no earlier than 2028, an N2 GeForce chip may not arrive before 2030. Intel has bought TSMC N3 silicon since Lunar Lake in late 2024 and may put some Nova Lake variants on N2 early next year. Its own 18A sits in the same class on paper, though most analysts still give TSMC the edge on transistor density.

Supply decides the rest. AI customers are absorbing leading-edge capacity, and wafers for desktop CPUs and consumer GPUs are not where AMD or Nvidia will spend their allocation first. A wait may not be the worst outcome if it gives chip prices room to come back down.

The wider Apple year has been busier than the benchmark charts suggest. The company is reportedly building Anti-Theft detection into the iPhone, using the accelerometer to lock a handset the moment it is snatched from a hand. In April a security team at Calif 'cracked' macOS on M5 hardware, chaining two unknown bugs into a root-level exploit that walked past Memory Integrity Enforcement, a defense Apple spent five years building.

Mac mini M6 units reach buyers on September 22. Everything anyone concludes about N2 in a PC is still an inference drawn from a chip Apple bought access to first.
