Unexpected New League of Legends Dev Update Video About Hextech Chests – What Have the Developers Prepared for Us?

On February 25, Riot Games released a new Dev Update video, where they shared what lies ahead for players. The release of this video was a surprise to the entire gaming community, and what the developers had prepared for us was even more unexpected. The main message of this Dev Update video is that the developers are listening to their fans and want to make the game even more comfortable, as well as reward their players more generously for the time invested in the game. Let's take a look at the key points.

Hextech Chests Are Coming Back

At the beginning of 2025, with the launch of the new season, the developers of League of Legends removed the ability to earn Hextech Chests for free. Previously, players could obtain these chests by completing specific tasks or achieving high ratings in matches. This change was met with significant backlash from the community, and fans did not stay silent, expressing their dissatisfaction wherever they could.

Seeing this wave of criticism, Riot Games decided to bring Hextech Chests back. You will be able to obtain them starting from the second act, specifically in patch 15.5, which is about to be released. Players will have the opportunity to earn a total of 10 chests and 10 keys per act. Eight out of ten chests will be available through the free Battle Pass, replacing the seasonal skin.

Additionally, Hextech Chests will no longer be obtainable through Champion Mastery. The reason behind this change is the difficulty in earning them due to differences in playstyles among players.

The remaining two chests can be acquired through the Honor system. With this change, the developers aim to foster a more friendly community by rewarding players for good behavior. Honor Chests can be earned by completing specific missions.

Changes to Champion Purchases

A major change, primarily affecting new players, is the reduction in champion prices. Riot Games realized that it is quite challenging for beginners to build a suitable champion roster. To help retain more players and make it easier for them to fully immerse themselves in the game, find their playstyle, and so on, this decision was made.

Additionally, the cost of purchasing champions with Blue Essence will be reduced by a whopping 50%, and all of this will be implemented in the next patch.

Exalted Mordekaiser Delay

The developers have decided to postpone the release of Exalted Mordekaiser. They want to refine and better present its core concept. Additionally, they plan to improve all other Exalted Skins.

Alongside this, changes have been made to the skins included in the paid seasonal Battle Pass. One of the seasonal skins will be removed, and instead, players will receive 25 Mythic Essence. This change comes as Mythic Essence has become incredibly difficult to obtain. Reducing the number of skins will also allow the team to better tailor them to champions that truly fit this season’s theme. There are plans to add Darius, Sion, and Talon skins to the paid Battle Pass.
