Ed Boon Might Be Teasing Next Mortal Kombat Installment

It is believed that NetherRealm Studios is working on a new installment of Mortal Kombat. Interestingly, one of the studio's leaders hinted in a social media post about what the upcoming game's title might be.

A recent poll by Ed Boon, the creative director of NetherRealm Studios, has caught users' attention. He asked fans to choose the title for the next Mortal Kombat installment, offering the following options: Mortal Kombat 13, Mortal Kombat 12, and Mortal Kombat 2. The majority of respondents (45%) believe that Mortal Kombat 2 is the best choice, which makes sense since the previous game is called Mortal Kombat 1, and its events take place in a new timeline.

What would you want the next Mortal Kombat to be called?

Interestingly, Boon also conducted a second poll asking which game fans wanted to see first—Marvel Tokkon 2 or Marvel vs. Capcom 4. Over 80% voted for the latter. As for the new Mortal Kombat, the first news about the game being in development surfaced this spring, but no additional details have been released since then. Speaking of Boon's polls, earlier in the spring he asked users on the social network X which remaster they wanted to see first —MK Shaolin Monks or Mortal Kombat 9—and fans speculated that this could also hint at the upcoming release of enhanced versions of both games.

There are also persistent rumors that NetherRealm Studios is working on Injustice 3. Allegedly, info about the characters who will appear in the game has been leaked, and Ed Boon himself teased the game might be in development. It is believed that the game is in an advanced stage of development, and an announcement could happen at any time—potentially even at The Game Awards 2026, which will take place next month.
