Pearl Abyss Revealed New Details About Crimson Desert and Its Upcoming DLC, Charting the Unknown

This week, Pearl Abyss will release a DLC for its hit game, Crimson Desert. The game is confirmed to receive a new region and a host of new features, including sea travel and brand-new adventures for the main characters.

During the Dropped Frames podcast, Will Powers, PR & Marketing Director at Pearl Abyss, shared new details about the expansion, revealing more about the changes to gameplay and the story. Reddit users have compiled all the information in a separate post, and below you’ll find the key points mentioned by Powers:

  • You must complete the main story of Crimson Desert to start the DLC. The expansion will focus on the separate stories of Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane, which are not connected in any way.
  • A new writer worked on Charting the Unknown—the same one who developed Crimson Desert Enhanced, which expands on the original game’s story. Powers also notes that Oongka’s epilogue is his favorite part of the expansion.
  • The DLC will show that Oongka and Damian are, in essence, just as much the main characters as Kliff. At the same time, the developers want each of them to have their own distinct personality.
  • New features in Charting the Unknown related to the fleet, settlements, and castles will become available in Chapter 3, after you establish the Greymane Camp.
  • Characters you can start romantic relationships with are distinguished by their quests and interactions—they aren’t just generic scripts. Other NPCs will also be able to visit your camp.
  • All NPCs in the game can now be interacted with, just like in Red Dead Redemption 2.
  • You can build houses and estates from scratch in any shape you like. Castles, however, are pre-built structures that unlock gradually as you complete special missions.
  • The ocean features massive sea monsters, plenty of secrets, dynamic weather changes, and the ability to board enemy ships.
  • As for the new content, it also covers the base game’s map, including side missions for each character. Additionally, the developers have updated some water bodies from the base game, and the entire coastline has been revamped for underwater exploration.

Another important point Powers mentioned is that Pearl Abyss will stop releasing weekly updates for Crimson Desert—but fans can still expect major free patches. He also added that most of the content added in the patches wasn’t planned in advance or cut before release but was made from scratch based on player feedback. This rapid update, in turn, was made possible by the game’s proprietary engine and the efforts of the development team.
