GTA 6 Could Break the Trend by Winning at TGA 2026—This Applies to the Sales of Past Winners

Some of the biggest events of the next two months are the release of GTA 6 in November and The Game Awards ceremony in December—and there’s every reason to believe these two events will be connected. The nominees for TGA 2026 have not yet been announced, but a recent report confirmed Rockstar could certainly submit GTA 6 for consideration, as projects set to go on sale no later than November 20 are allowed to be nominated.

And while it’s still unclear whether GTA 6 will be featured at The Game Awards 2026, to many it seems obvious—as does the game’s victory in the “Game of the Year” category. If that does indeed happen, Rockstar’s project could break the trend in which games with budgets and corresponding revenue that are relatively modest compared to GTA 6 have won the award. As a new report from Alinea Analytics shows, the combined sales of the last four games to win at The Game Awards—Elden Ring, Baldur’s Gate 3, Astro Bot, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33—totaled 73 million copies sold, with total revenue of approximately $3.8 billion.

Here are some revenue estimates for the past four The Game Awards GOTY winners

Elden Ring (2022 winner), Baldur’s Gate 3 (2023), Astro Bot (2024), and Expedition 33 (2025) have generated a combined $3.8B via 73M copies sold.

Rockstar Games has not yet disclosed the budget for GTA 6, but preliminary estimates suggest it could be in the range of $1.5 to $2 billion, given the game's scale. A recent article by Jason Schreier also confirms GTA 6 sales could reach 40 million copies in the first four months, generating more than $3 billion in revenue.
