Epic Games Delays Marvel and Star Wars Shooter Over Switch to AI-First Development

Epic Games is officially working with Disney on a shooter featuring characters from Marvel and Star Wars. According to the latest report, though, the project has been delayed, and the new approach to development doesn’t involve hand-written code.

This update was shared by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier. His report claims Epic Games’ ambitious project was first planned for release at the end of this year, then pushed to March 2027, and is now delayed indefinitely. The main reason is a change in how the game is being built. The big crossover will use an “AI-first” approach, which means developers will have to generate content with AI tools, including visual assets, textures, game concepts, and more.

Epic Games has delayed the release of a shooter game that features Marvel & Star Wars characters.

Developers on the game have been told to only use AI to write the code — “No more hand-written code.”

All art for the game will be “generated with full AI workflows.”

The article also adds that some developers were skeptical of this approach and questioned the game’s final quality. Players’ reaction to generative AI is another concern, especially when generated textures, dialogue, and other elements aren’t top-notch.

Details about Disney and Epic Games shooter are still unknown. Disney has previously stated they want to create “something truly transformational” with this partnership and that Fortnite is an example of huge success that opens up incredible possibilities for its characters and how they can be used.
