Gears of War: E-Day Servers Hit by DDoS Attack

Over the weekend, a lot of Gears of War: E-Day players couldn’t log in. The Coalition later confirmed that a DDoS attack on the game’s online services caused the outage.

The studio explained what happened in a post on X:

Earlier today, some players experienced intermittent disconnects, login issues, or other service disruptions. These issues were due to distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting our online services

In a DDoS attack, someone floods servers with huge amounts of traffic to overload them and knock them offline. For players, that meant failed logins and sudden disconnects. The Xbox service status page lists every platform as affected: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, cloud gaming, and PC. The worst of it lasted a few hours overnight from October 11 to 12, and then the servers came back. Xbox still marks the final resolution as pending, and The Coalition says it’s keeping an eye on things.

If you haven’t bought the game yet but plan to, you can get Gears of War: E-Day at a good price on Eneba, which offers different editions of the game. Use promo code EGW5 for 5% off everything available on the platform.

Nobody knows who is behind the attack yet, and no one has claimed responsibility.

The attack came less than a week after Gears of War: E-Day launched on October 6. Critics liked the game, which holds an 87 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic. Sales look weaker. Alinea Analytics estimates E-Day has sold only about 230,000 copies, while around 1.7 million people have played it through Game Pass.
