Resident Evil Veronica Won’t Be Just a Remake but a Reimagining Inspired by Italian Giallo Horror

Capcom has confirmed its next Resident Evil release will be a Code Veronica remake, now going by the title Resident Evil Veronica. Since the summer announcement, official details have been scarce, but insiders have been picking up the slack.

The latest news comes once again from Dusk Golem, one of the franchise's most reliable sources. According to him, Resident Evil Veronica isn't just a straightforward remake - it's a reimagining drawing inspiration from European giallo horror films. He also revealed the project's internal codename was "Argento," which is a nod to director Dario Argento, known for horror classics like Suspiria and Deep Red. Given that giallo as a subgenre leans into psychological thrillers with a surreal atmosphere and stylized violence, that seems to line up with the direction Capcom appears to be taking during the development of Resident Evil Veronica.

He stated that the game had a Codename “Project Argento” an homage to Dario Argento (Suspiria, Inferno, The Phantom of the Opera) who is known for creating films of the aforementioned genre.

Veronica is setting up to be more of a reimagining than a remake, and the project feels quite ambitious.

The original game received stellar reviews on Dreamcast (initially and exclusive) scoring 94%.

Capcom still hasn't confirmed an official release date for Resident Evil Veronica. The game was originally expected to launch sometime in the first half of next year, though Dusk Golem has recently suggested it could be postponed to autumn 2027 instead.

Separately, recent reports show sales across several Resident Evil titles have significantly improved, driven by both a Capcom-wide sale and the theatrical release of the new film based on the franchise. Capcom is also still working on a story DLC for Resident Evil Requiem, though its release date and other details remain unknown.
