Critic Ratings of Marvel’s Wolverine Continue to Fall

Marvel's Wolverine, Insomniac's newest addition to the studio’s version of the gaming Marvel universe, has been one of this month's biggest releases. Despite all the hype, critic reviews for the new PlayStation Studios project came in fairly lukewarm, and player reception has landed somewhere in mixed territory too. Now, just over a week later, it’s clear that the picture hasn't really changed.

As we recall, the game launched on Metacritic at 78 and has since dipped two points over the past week. The user score is notably lower, sitting at 6.8 out of 10 across more than 4,500 reviews. A similar pattern shows up on OpenCritic, where the score has dropped to 78 (from 81) and the recommendation rate has fallen to 66%, down 13% from embargo lift, while the user rating there sits at 80.

Even with nearly 2 million copies of Marvel’s Wolverine having been sold in its first three days, Alinea Analytics' Rhys Elliott, who shared those numbers, cautioned shortly after the game likely won't be a major financial hit or repeat the success of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, largely because the mixed critical reception could be turning off potential buyers.

Meanwhile, Insomniac Games hasn't shared official sales figures of Marvel’s Wolverine yet. It's previously been reported the game needs to hit 6 million copies in its first year to meet Sony's expectations and secure the green light for further expansion of the gaming universe. However, the studio is reportedly already working on Marvel's Venom, a new spin-off, along with Marvel's Spider-Man 3, which is expected to conclude Peter Parker's story.
