The Sinking City 2 Released and Received Praised Reviews from Critics and Players

On August 18, The Sinking City 2—the sequel to Frogwares’ original 2019 game—was released on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. The developers have succeeded in making a high-quality game by switching genres and drawing inspiration from Resident Evil, and as a result, the game has received positive reviews from both critics and gamers.

At the moment, The Sinking City 2 has a score of 79 on Metacritic and a Top Critic Average of 81 on OpenCritic, with 77% of critics recommending the game. Reviews praise the shift in genre from action-adventure to survival horror, stating that the transition feels superb, while also highlighting the storytelling, the world, and the characters. Among the drawbacks mentioned are the less-than-perfect facial animations and some issues with the inventory, which fills up with important items all too quickly. You can check out some of the more detailed reviews from gaming journalists below:

DualShockers – 90/100:

The Sinking City 2 is an absolute triumph, not only due to its harrowing real-world origins, but because of how Frogwares masterfully crafted a survival horror game as their first product in the genre. Its story, world, and characters are enthralling and compelling, and by the end of my first run, I immediately began playing it again as I just wanted more of the game.

CGMagazine – 85/100:

The Sinking City 2 offers a solid survival horror experience that feels both different and similar to its predecessor.

PlayStation Universe – 85/100:

The Sinking City 2 takes a lot of obvious gameplay inspirations from the greats. While that part of the game isn't original, it doesn't need to be. Don't mess with success. It might not have the same level of visual budget, but it still works and plays well. Besides, the story and setting alone make The Sinking City 2 a must-play survival horror game. Combine that with what makes the modern Resident Evil games popular, and you have a great recipe for success.

GamesRadar+ - 80/100:

The Sinking City 2 is a confident adventure that can go tentacle to tentacle with modern survival horror like Resident Evil and Silent Hill. The odd misstep is forgiven when Lovecraftian twists work so well to deliver some unsettling, unexpected moments of terror that just feel oh so joyous to squeal at.

Gamereactor UK – 80/100:

The skills shown by this Ukrainian team to take what was so special about the original game and the studio's own understanding of narrative-heavy puzzlers, and then merging this effectively with the survival horror template, all makes for a wonderful marriage of ideas that in practice delivers an enjoyable and thrilling experience.

GamingBolt – 80/100:

The Sinking City 2 eschews its predecessor’s investigative chops to present a more straightforward trek through a semi-open world flooded with things to discover and horrors to witness.
