Fable’s Budget Is Reportedly Bigger Than Expected—That Could Play a Dirty Trick with Xbox

One of several major titles set to release in February 2027 is Fable, the latest entry in the well-known RPG series, developed by Playground Games (the studio behind Forza Horizon). It's now been revealed the game's budget significantly exceeds Xbox's expectations, and if the new installment doesn't perform well, that could lead to financial difficulties.

The information comes from reliable insider and Windows Central editor Jez Corden. In his latest blog post, he revealed that Fable's development has cost Xbox considerably more than originally planned—it's now one of the company's most expensive titles, which is putting real pressure on expectations for its commercial performance after launch. Although the exact budget hasn't been disclosed, so far, there haven't been any issues with the game's release itself.

Fable will have its work cut out attracting players in February 2027, given titles like Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis (February 12), Persona 4 Revival (February 18), and, as recently announced, God of War: Laufey (February 16) are all launching that same month. Playground Games' new project could be facing some stiff competition, and if it underperforms critically or financially, Xbox likely won't take the news well, given the game's increased budget, as revealed by Corden.

This summer, Playground Games confirmed the main villain in Fable will be a character named Isabel, voiced and performed by Marvel star Hayley Atwell. The game will also feature Jack of Blades, a villain who previously appeared in Fable: The Lost Chapters. Fable is confirmed to release on February 23, 2027, for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5. Premium Edition owners get access to the game a few days early, on February 18.
