Bungie Is Rumored to Be Working on a Borderlands Remake Similar to Destiny

After last month Bungie released the final update for Destiny 2, The Final Shape, and was hit by massive layoffs affecting around 400 employees —including its head, Justin Truman—the future of the development team remains uncertain. However, according to a recent rumor, the company might secretly be working on a remake of an unexpected video game that originally came out back in 2009.

As reported by VICE, Sony and Bungie are in talks with representatives from 2K and Gearbox with the goal of reimagining the original Borderlands as a live-service shooter, similar to the Destiny franchise. It is mentioned that, if the project gets approved, the game could feature an open world like the one in Borderlands 4, character customization options, and many other features not present in the original. Additionally, as part of this collaboration, Borderlands 2—one of the series' best titles—might also become a temporary exclusive for the PlayStation 6. According to the source, the information was provided by an employee from 2K's Business Development team. However, updated information reveals that the initial news about a possible Destiny-style Borderlands remake actually originated from a 4chan leak. Therefore, the above statements should be taken with a grain of salt.

A new rumor claims Bungie could be working on a Borderlands 1 remake, but don’t get your hopes up just yet.

According to Destiny content creator Trance, Bungie, Sony, 2K, and Gearbox are reportedly in very early discussions about remaking the original Borderlands as a Destiny-style live-service looter shooter.

The rumored project would feature an open-world structure similar to Borderlands 4, seasonal paid content, and semi-customizable player characters instead of the original Vault Hunters.

The same rumor also claims Gearbox is considering a Borderlands 2 remake as a timed PlayStation 6 exclusive if the deal moves forward.

The information supposedly comes from “a colleague who works in Business Development at 2K.”

As for Bungie's current situation, the studio continues to actively support Marathon, its new live-service shooter released this March. Unfortunately for the studio, the game has struggled to find its audience, with player activity on Steam declining day by day. For instance, just over 6,000 players logged into Marathon in the last 24 hours, while Destiny 2 attracted more than 70,000 players during the same period.

Bungie's latest title, Marathon, is now available on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
