Sony Aims to Achieve 4K Resolution and 120 FPS on the PlayStation 6 Using AI
Amid the unveiling of Microsoft's next-generation console, Project Helix, and the recent launch of pre-orders for the Steam Machine, Sony has remained silent about its upcoming console, the PlayStation 6. However, rumors about the device continue to circulate online, with a new report discussing the potential frame rates and resolutions that could be achieved thanks to certain technologies.
According to the well-known insider Moore's Law Is Dead, who previously leaked information about the PlayStation 6, a recent video suggests that Sony is exploring AI-based frame generation technology to achieve 120 FPS at 4K resolution—without sacrificing quality. Specifically, this involves Virtual Frame Interpolation, a program that creates additional frames between those already rendered and drawn. This approach could help Sony deliver smoother visuals without needing to increase the console’s processing power.
Not long ago, there were rumors suggesting that Sony might delay the release of the PlayStation 6 to 2028 or even 2029. However, Kepler_L2 debunked these claims and confirmed that the console is still expected to launch during the holiday season of 2027. At this point, Sony hasn't confirmed release date or any details about its next-generation console.
