50 Years of History, Unique Combat and Snoop Dogg: New Details of Stranger Than Heaven Revealed

As promised at the Xbox Partner Preview in March, developers from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio held a special presentation for their upcoming project titled Stranger Than Heaven. During the 30-minute presentation, new details about the gameplay and the cast involved in the project were revealed.

The events of the game Stranger Than Heaven span a 50-year period in Japanese history, from 1915 to 1965, and take place in the following cities: Kokura, Kure, Minami, Atami, and Kamurocho. The main character, Makoto Daito, who is half Japanese and half American, flees the United States for Japan at a young age in search of his family. On the ship, he meets a smuggler named Orpheus, and upon arriving in the Land of the Rising Sun, they start doing business together.

The main features of Stranger Than Heaven are its combat system as well as an unusual aspect for such games - the musical component. The game's protagonist, Makoto, possesses a unique ability—to record and analyze the sounds of the surrounding environment to create his own music. Subsequently, his duties will include producing and scouting talents capable of performing his works: he will decide which musicians will participate in various kinds of shows.

The combat system looks even more impressive since in Stranger Than Heaven the player controls the left and right sides of the main character separately. For example, with one hand he can block a strike, while with the other he can immediately counterattack. It is specified that on consoles this function is activated by pressing the LT and RT buttons; how it will work on PC is currently unknown. Additionally, the developers promise a cinematic fighting style thanks to the presence of a huge variety of melee weapons in the game—from katanas to nunchaku.

Speaking of another musical aspect and switching to the topic of the cast, the developers announced that Snoop Dogg will voice the aforementioned character named Orpheus, who plays one of the most important roles in the game. Additionally, the son of the legendary performer, Cordell Broadus, is also involved in the game's development, and among the confirmed actors are Tori Kelly and Satoshi Fujihara. Together, they also recorded a soundtrack to Stranger Than Heaven. More info about the game you can check out here.
