Metro 2039 First Gameplay and Story Details Shared by 4A Games

After the initial announcement last week, 4A Games and Deep Silver have officially revealed the new Metro video game titled Metro 2039. The title received a reveal cinematic trailer and gameplay footage during Xbox First Look presentation on April 16.

Metro 2039 is the fourth installment of the game series, confirmed to take place after Metro Exodus, and brings back moscow metro from the original Metro 2033. The reveal trailer also confirmed The Stranger as the game’s new protagonist, and a recent report from Engadget reveals more details about the upcoming title.

Since the developers, 4A Games, are a studio based in Ukraine, it has been confirmed that Metro 2039’s story is influenced by the real war, the full-scale invasion of Ukraine started by russia back in 2022. That is why the main themes of the game are war, tyranny, and survival. The author of Metro novels, Dmitry Glukhovsky, a russian, who judged his country’s invasion of Ukraine, is also serving as one of screenwriters.

Speaking of the new main character, The Stranger, for the first time it will be a fully voiced character, unlike the previous one, Artem, from Metro 2033, Metro: Last Light, and Metro Exodus. Like the other survivors, he will stand up to an authoritarian neo-Nazi movement called the Novoreich, led by their Fuhrer—the legendary Spartan, Hunter. The gameplay is focused on heavy realism, which also provides a minimal amount of UI for full immersion; and, as revealed in the reveal trailer, we can also expect the elements of psychological horror and tense atmosphere.

The graphics are also receiving some enhancements, as Metro 2039 is using the upgraded version of 4A Games’ engine—4A Engine—which also includes ray tracing.

Metro 2039 doesn’t have an exact release date yet, but it is confirmed to be released this winter for PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.
