Capcom’s New IP Pragmata Receives First Reviews—Studio Made Another GOTY Contender

Capcom’s latest title and newest IP, Pragmata, releases in a few days on PC, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with first reviews from various gaming outlets starting to appear. As we can see, the studio has made another great game that could potentially be in the running for Game of the Year award.

The game is currently having an 85 score at Metacritic based on 54 Critic Reviews, and 87 Top Critic Average with 93% Recommended on Opencritic. Pragmata is massively praised for the chemistry between main characters, Hugh and Diana, an engaging combat system centered on hacking, and a gripping story that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. And even though the story has its weak moments, the game is being hailed as one of the most impressive IPs of recent years—Capcom has once again managed to deliver an incredible product, following the stunning success of Resident Evil Requiem in this year’s February. You can check out some of gaming outlets reviews below:

GameSpew – 100/100:

“Capcom has taken a gamble with Pragmata, blending together multiple genres to create something that feels fresh and unique. At the heart of it is hacking-infused third-person shooter combat, which remains engaging and exciting throughout. And when paired with a story that tugs on the heartstrings, the result is something rather special. Ultimately, Pragmata is not only game of the year material, but also one of the most exciting new IPs in recent years.”

Console Creatures – 90/100:

“As far as I'm concerned, Capcom's developers hit a stride so few achieve. Pragmata clicks from the beginning, delivering an incredible campaign with stellar mechanics, held together by Hugh and Diana's relationship.”

Critical Hits – 90/100:

“Pragmata is a miracle of the modern video game era, with extremely experimental combat in a big-budget game that works very well. It's not without minor stumbles along the way, such as a lack of world-building and specific parts of the story that lacked cohesion, but none of that diminishes the brilliance of the combat and the intimate father-daughter story. For a first attempt at something new, the game succeeds admirably, and I sincerely hope it receives a sequel that further refines the concepts created here.”

Gameliner – 90/100:

“Capcom takes a bold swing with Pragmata, and it pays off: a gripping moonbound journey, strong character dynamics, and slick, addictive combat. Not everything sticks, though: the story plays it safe and floaty controls can frustrate but it never stops being a wildly entertaining space ride.”

TheGamer – 90/100:

“It’s got big ambitions, a big heart, and two big and beautiful characters leading the charge on an intergalactic adventure like no other. Cheese and cliché aside, Pragmata is a rare triumph.”

Forbes: 9/10

“Overall, Pragmata is a very fresh take on a modern third-person shooter, with a unique combat setup that is equal parts tactics and brute force skill. It also looks wonderful throughout, and the interactions between Hugh, Diana, and Cabin are a lot of fun and genuinely sweet. It may be a bit too early to call, but thus far, this is easily my game of the year.”

GamesRadar+ - 80/100

“Pragmata is nostalgia wrapped in a shiny new spacesuit with plenty of cool tricks up its pressurized sleeve. It's good to see Capcom returning to its quirky action beat, with an impressive host of weaponry, upgrades, combat hacks, and base-building as the sci-fi adventure moves through beautifully-conceptualized biomes. The visual and stylistic elements definitely give me deja-vu at times, and I could do without its heavy-handed themes battering me over the head, but beneath all that polished titanium sits a profound tale of humanity I'll not soon forget.”

Digital Spy – 80/100

“Pragmata is an incredibly fun experience that's full of satisfying combat, progression and unlocks, providing constant dopamine hits of sci-fi sounds and meaningful upgrades. This charming action-adventure deserves to be a massive hit and you should take a chance on one of this year's best games.”

VGC – 4/5:

“Pragmata feels like a game from a simpler time. There's no live service fluff, no needless bloat, and no sense that Capcom is hopping on a trend. It's a rock solid action game that isn't great on length, but delivers little filler, fast combat, and some charming story moments.”
