You Don’t Need to Play Previous Witcher Installments to Understand the Story of The Witcher 4.

As we know, CD Projekt RED is working on multiple video games, including the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and the studio’s new IP, Project Hadar, but, perhaps, the most anticipated title from the developers is The Witcher 4.

The game was officially announced back at The Game Awards 2024 and introduced Ciri as its protagonist, who replaced Geralt of Rivia, the main character of The Witcher trilogy. The Witcher 4 is indeed the continuation of story concluded in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, but recent hints teasing it will also be suitable for those who aren't familiar with The Witcher saga.

As revealed via Legion Looterana, the upcoming The Witcher 4 will not require from players the knowledge from the original Witcher game, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, as CD Projekt RED is developing the game from “the clean slate.” It will probably have some references to previous installments and the franchise’s lore, but it will also be a standalone adventure for the new generation, as you can check out below:

  • The Witcher 4 will NOT require having played the original trilogy to understand its world;
  • The game director has already confirmed that this installment will be a "clean slate." The goal is for it to serve as the perfect entry point for a new generation;
  • Although they will respect the universe and there will be nods to it, the plot will be understood from scratch without needing to play The Witcher 1, 2, or 3;

As we know, besides The Witcher 4, CD Projekt RED is also reportedly working on the fifth and sixth installments of franchise, and studio’s plan is to release the whole trilogy within a six-year period, which was confirmed by the CEO of the company, Michal Nowakowski. Moreover, Fool’s Theory studio is rumored to be working on a new DLC for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which would set up events for the fourth game.
