Pearl Abyss Admits Crimson Desert Shipped Unintended AI-Generated Images and Promises Full Audit

Pearl Abyss confirmed on March 22 that Crimson Desert shipped with AI-generated images that were never intended for the final build. In a public statement, the studio said "2D visual props were created as part of early-stage iteration using experimental AI generative tools," describing them as placeholders used to explore tone and atmosphere during early production. The images surfaced on social media in the days after launch, prompting some players to call them "the final nail in the coffin" for the troubled game.

The developer maintained that the assets were always scheduled for replacement by final work from its art and development teams. Some were not replaced.
