These heroines come from a wide range of franchises and genres. Some are explorers navigating dangerous ruins, others are survivors fighting through post-apocalyptic worlds, while many are warriors battling powerful enemies and saving entire civilizations.

The 25 PlayStation Heroines

Sony’s list includes characters from both long-running franchises and newer titles:

  • Aloy – Horizon series
  • Angrboda – God of War
  • Atsu – Ghost of Yotei
  • Chloe Frazer & Nadine Ross – Uncharted
  • Chun-Li – Street Fighter
  • Ellie Williams – The Last of Us
  • Eve – Stellar Blade
  • Jill Valentine – Resident Evil
  • Kena – Kena: Bridge of Spirits
  • Lara Croft – Tomb Raider
  • Maelle – Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

  • Sam Giddings – Until Dawn
  • Selene Vassos – Returnal

Sony grouped these characters into five different categories, each highlighting a different aspect of what defines a strong protagonist. For example, characters such as Sam Giddings and Jill Valentine were recognized as “heroines of survival,” praised for enduring terrifying situations. Meanwhile, fighters like Chun-Li and Atsu were placed in a category celebrating combat mastery.

The list blends classic gaming icons with newer characters, reflecting how female protagonists have continued to evolve across PlayStation generations.

Community Reactions and Debate

While the list has been widely praised, it has also sparked discussion among fans. Some players pointed out that the title “On PlayStation” allows Sony to include characters from games that are not PlayStation exclusives, such as Chun-Li and Lara Croft.

Others noted the absence of certain fan-favorite characters. For example, some fans expressed disappointment that Kat from Gravity Rush was not included. Additionally, following Claire Redfield’s reduced presence in recent Resident Evil projects, some players were surprised that she did not appear on Sony’s list either, especially given her popularity compared to other characters from the franchise.

Female Protagonists Continue to Shape Gaming

Despite the debates, Sony’s list highlights how important female characters have become in modern gaming. Titles like The Last of Us Part II, which features Ellie as the central protagonist, have achieved major commercial success and critical acclaim.
