Final Fantasy 7 Remake Gets A Major Overhaul On PS5 And PC
Square Enix will release a significant patch for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on PlayStation 5 and PC. The Final Fantasy 7 Remake Update, arriving Thursday, January 22, 2026, introduces new features to the existing versions of the game. This brings them in line with the versions launching for Xbox Series X/S and the Switch 2 next week. The publisher is ensuring parity across all platforms, giving current players access to all the new bells and whistles at the same time as new players. This update prepares for the wider release of the trilogy, which the company has confirmed will be available on all platforms.
The publisher announced in a tweet that the patch adds features for "Streamlined Progression." This includes several boosters that players can toggle on and off individually or as a group. The options allow players to keep HP and MP permanently full, ensure the Limit gauge is always full, and make every hit deal 9,999 damage.
These additions will help players who wish to replay the story before the third part of the trilogy is released. The update arrives as anticipation builds for Final Fantasy 7 Remake on Switch 2 and Xbox. It is not yet clear if using these boosters will affect unlocking trophies on the PlayStation 5 version of the game.
"I feel that the way people enjoy content has become more flexible these days, as we see with video streaming platforms, and that people also want the same thing from games, with options to tailor the experience based on the time they have and their levels of interest," said director Naoki Hamaguchi.
"I have also had personal experiences where I wanted to play something with the limited time I have but gave up because of the time it takes to level up characters or traverse the game. That’s exactly why I think that the Streamlined Progression feature is very effective - to give players smooth access to the story."
This patch provides a way for anyone wanting to revisit Midgar to do so with minimal effort. It allows a focus on the narrative differences from the original 1997 game. The move to bring the whole trilogy to Xbox and Switch 2, alongside PC and PS5, signals a broader multiplatform strategy for the series. In related news, Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida also hinted that the latest mainline title in the franchise could be heading to the Switch 2 in the near future.
