Sony Prepares for a Portable PS6

The leaked materials suggest that Sony engineers have accelerated work on a special power-saving mode for the PS5—one that intentionally reduces game performance. This system is reportedly being created to support the company’s future portable PS6, ensuring the handheld can offer extensive backward compatibility with the PS5 library from day one.

Even though the portable device may run games at a lower resolution, titles optimized for the handheld are expected to maintain a stable 60 FPS.

PSSR2: A Major Leap in Upscaling

Sony is also developing PSSR2, a significant upgrade to its current upscaling technology. Developers now have access to enhanced tools designed to detect and fix graphical issues present in today’s games. With this new algorithm, titles will be able to reach 4K at 120 FPS, and even 8K at 60 FPS, marking a huge step forward in visual performance.

Two PS6 Models Planned for 2027

If the leaks are accurate, the PlayStation 6 will launch in late 2027, and Sony plans to release two versions at once:

  • A standard home console, expected to cost around $650 for the digital-only edition
  • A portable PS6, priced at approximately $499

Sony may later introduce a budget-friendly portable model for $299, built using binned but stable chips that didn't meet higher performance thresholds.

PS6 Pro Still Uncertain

The fate of a PS6 Pro remains unclear. Insider reports claim Sony will only produce an upgraded model if it sees a genuine market need—and certainly not before 2030.
