Unko Technica Demo Lets You Play as a Poop in 150 Retro-Style Levels

Steam Next Fest is hosting a new indie title called Unko Technica, where players control a poop navigating a series of challenging levels to reach the toilet. The game includes 150 retro-inspired stages, simple jump-based controls, boss encounters, and a shop for customizing poops with various skins.

A press release from Japanese publisher Phoenixx Inc. emphasized the game’s playful tone:

"Time turds carefully, as one wrong means starting over from the beginning of the level. Kerplunk on top of bouncy bubbles to fling feces to new heights, hit the point of return while crossing crumbling platforms, and smear dung onto on/off switches to activate hidden paths. Collect UN-KOINS along the way to buy tougher stages where shi — things really start hitting the fan." — Phoenixx Inc.

The game’s neon level designs are visually striking, and the soundtrack complements the fast-paced platforming. Its geometric, morphing motion graphics draw comparisons to Earthbound, giving the game a quirky retro charm.

Unko Technica is part of a longer tradition of video games incorporating dung, either as obstacles or tools. Titles like Death Stranding, Ark: Survival Evolved, Palworld, and South Park: The Stick of Truth have all included poop-related mechanics in some form.

Despite its unconventional premise, Unko Technica has already earned accolades, winning top honors at Bandai Namco’s GYAAR Studio 2023 Indie Game Contest. The demo is available on Steam now, with the full release scheduled for PC on November 19.
