Sony’s PS6 Handheld Could Launch at $500 – Here’s What to Expect
As gaming hardware prices continue to climb, many fans are concerned about how much Sony’s upcoming portable console will cost. Recent handheld competitors like the ROG Ally and Ally X surprised buyers with premium price tags of $599.99 and $999.99, respectively.
But according to trusted insider KeplerL2, Sony’s PS6 Handheld — reportedly codenamed Canis — could launch at around $500. This would position it as a strong competitor to the Nintendo Switch 2, which starts at $450 without a bundled game. By the time Sony’s handheld hits the market, that price may even climb higher, giving Sony a potential advantage.
Why Sony Might Keep the Price Lower
On the ResetEra forums, KeplerL2 explained that the ROG Ally is a low-volume product, allowing Asus to justify a higher price. Sony, however, could benefit from economies of scale and a more efficient system-on-chip (SoC), helping to reduce manufacturing costs and keep the price competitive.
Expected PS6 Handheld Specs
For roughly $500, players might get a handheld capable of running PS4, PS5, and PS6 titles in portable mode with updates. Early leaks suggest the following specifications:
- APU: 4 AMD Zen 6C cores for gaming + 2 energy-efficient Zen 6 cores for the OS
- GPU: Based on RDNA 5 architecture with enhanced ray tracing and improved FPS performance
- Docking Support: Boosts GPU frequency from 1.2 GHz to 1.6 GHz for a performance bump in docked mode
The display choice may be one of the biggest factors in determining the final price. KeplerL2 notes that avoiding an OLED screen could be key to keeping the handheld’s launch price close to $500.
