The Medium Is Getting a Movie Adaptation by the ‘It’ Screenwriter

Bloober Team, the studio behind the psychological horror game The Medium, is seeing its hit game move beyond the screen. The Hollywood Reporter confirms that The Medium will be turned into a movie by Gary Dauberman, a filmmaker with a strong horror pedigree. Dauberman is known for writing and directing the It movies based on Stephen King’s novel and helped bring the recent Until Dawn game to the big screen.

Dauberman called The Medium a “natural for a feature film adaptation” because of its gripping story and cinematic visuals. He connected immediately with Bloober Team’s CEO Piotr Babieno over their shared love of horror and vision for the genre’s future. Dauberman believes Bloober is pushing horror forward in new and terrifying ways, and he’s excited to collaborate with them.

Babieno spoke highly of Dauberman as well, saying that adapting games into films is often a challenge, but he feels Dauberman is the perfect partner. Their conversations have shown complete alignment in their goals for the adaptation.

The Medium originally came out in 2021. Critics were mixed—some praised its writing and acting, calling it some of the best in the genre, while others were less enthusiastic. Still, the game has a strong fan base, with nearly 6,700 positive user reviews on Steam. It was also financially successful, covering its development and marketing costs just days after release.

The news about the movie raises questions about Medium TV series that was announced back in 2022. Since then, there has been no clear update or progress on that front. Bloober Team’s investor relations page, which is mostly in Polish, doesn’t offer much information. The studio has been contacted for comment, but there has been no response so far.

Bloober Team has been busy and gaining momentum lately. Their remake of Silent Hill 2 was a hit, and they have more projects lined up, including a remake of Silent Hill 1 and a sci-fi survival horror game. They also launched a new horror label that is working on an adaptation of the comic I Hate This Place. After years of being underestimated, the studio is proving itself a major player in the horror genre.

With Dauberman’s involvement, The Medium movie could attract both fans of the game and general horror audiences. His track record with It and Until Dawn gives hope that the adaptation will keep the eerie atmosphere and psychological depth of the original game.

How the movie will balance the unique dual-reality gameplay and story remains to be seen. Still, the collaboration signals confidence in the game’s cinematic potential and Bloober Team’s creative vision. The project also highlights a growing trend of adapting video games into films, especially in the horror genre.
