Wuchang: Fallen Feathers Hits Big on Steam, But UE5 Problems Drag It Down
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers just launched and already pulled in over 114,000 peak players on Steam. That’s more than what Dark Souls and Sekiro managed at their highest points, which says a lot about the hype around this new soulslike from Chinese developer Leenzee.
It’s clearly riding the same wave as Black Myth: Wukong, another action RPG out of China that recently broke records with 2.4 million peak players. Wuchang isn’t there yet, but its strong first-day numbers put it in the spotlight. Soulslike fans have shown up — even if they’re not entirely happy.
The problem? Performance. Wuchang is built with Unreal Engine 5, and just like other recent UE5 games, it’s struggling. Players are calling the experience “abysmal,” “unstable,” and “god-awful” across the reviews. The game currently holds a Mostly Negative rating on Steam, even with all the attention it's getting.
“Another unstable UE5 title.”
That’s one of the most upvoted quotes on the game’s Steam page. It’s not just PC users, either — even the PS5 version is reportedly not running smoothly. No patch, no official word from Leenzee yet. This silence is making the situation worse for players who hoped Wuchang would be polished at launch.
Despite the backlash, the game’s core design is being praised. It's a straight-up soulslike with tight combat, a dark aesthetic, and its own death mechanic twist. Some reviews say it’s “competent” and “cool,” but note that there aren’t many surprises if you’ve played the genre before. It knows what it is and leans into that.
There’s another interesting layer here. Chinese-language users now make up half of Steam’s player base, according to Valve’s hardware survey from March. So it’s no coincidence that we’re seeing more big titles from Chinese studios climbing the charts. Wuchang is the latest — and probably not the last — to follow Wukong’s lead.
If you’re thinking about diving into Wuchang: Fallen Feathers on PC, make sure your rig can handle it. Unreal Engine 5 isn’t kind to underpowered systems, and this game is no exception.
PC system requirements for Wuchang: Fallen Feathers are available now, so check those before buying. Performance is the current dealbreaker for many, and until patches arrive, it might stay that way.
Wuchang proves that the audience for these dark, demanding action RPGs is growing fast, especially when they come from new voices in the global dev scene. But a flashy engine means nothing if the game chugs on good hardware. For now, Wuchang is a strong contender with a shaky start.
