SEGA and Rovio have officially announced Sonic Blitz, a new mobile card game set in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. The game invites players to build 12-card decks featuring iconic characters and face off against opponents in fast-paced online battles.

Leaning heavily into its collectible nature, Sonic Blitz appears to take cues from genre-defining titles like Clash Royale, Marvel Snap, and the Pokémon Trading Card Game. The game is currently in technical testing exclusively in the Philippines, with the outcome likely to influence plans for a global launch.

This move comes after the troubled development of Sonic Rumble, which was repeatedly delayed before being shelved indefinitely. While some speculated that SEGA might scale back its mobile ambitions, the company's billion-dollar acquisition of Rovio suggests otherwise.
