Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Devs Tease “Great Ideas” for Their Next Game
Following the breakout success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, the team at Sandfall Interactive is already looking ahead. While they remain tight-lipped on the details, the studio has confirmed they’re brimming with “great ideas” for their next title — and they’re committed to keeping their development approach focused and agile.
🚀 Expedition 33 Becomes a 2025 Sensation
Launched with little fanfare, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 defied expectations by quickly becoming one of 2025’s biggest hits. The turn-based RPG was both a critical darling and commercial triumph, selling millions of copies within weeks.
What made the story even more compelling was the size of the team behind it: a 30-person development crew, some of whom were working on their first-ever game. With debut voice actors and a composer discovered on SoundCloud, the project captured the gaming community’s imagination — especially once its humble origins came to light.
🧠 A Small Team With Big Ideas
Now riding high on their success, Sandfall Interactive is already planning their next move, but they’re not letting the momentum go to their heads. Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, Sandfall COO François Meurisse confirmed that the team intends to stay small and focused as they begin development on their next game.
“For now, our vision would be to stick to a close team working in the same city with less than 50 people on board,” Meurisse said.“Focusing on one project after another, and keeping this agility, and this creative strength, and smartness of a small group of passionate people wanting to do something big.”
He pointed to industry-defining classics like Ocarina of Time and Half-Life 2, developed by teams of 60–70 people, as proof that smaller studios can still deliver groundbreaking work.
⚠️ Avoiding the Pitfalls of Rapid Expansion
Rather than chasing aggressive growth, Sandfall is prioritizing sustainable creativity. Meurisse warned that ballooning team sizes can often backfire:
“There are plenty of games made with very large teams and for huge amounts of money that don’t land. And there is a human cost to running things that way. People lose their jobs.”
This mindset positions Sandfall as a studio focused on quality over quantity, determined not to sacrifice their culture or creativity for scale.
🔮 What’s Next for Sandfall Interactive?
While specifics remain under wraps, Meurisse teased that Studio Head Guillaume Broche already has some strong concepts in development. The team is eager to apply the skills and experience gained from Expedition 33 as they take on their next challenge.
“I can’t wait to dig more into the ideas we already have for the next game,” Meurisse said.
With the studio entering its next project “from a more efficient position,” fans can expect Sandfall’s next title to be built on an even more refined creative foundation.
