Red Dead Redemption 2 Rumored for Nintendo Switch 2 Later This Year
According to a new rumor, Red Dead Redemption 2 might be galloping onto the Nintendo Switch 2 as early as this year. Following Nintendo’s April showcase—where fans got a closer look at the upcoming console and a host of third-party games—the speculation surrounding additional titles has only intensified. Among the most exciting is the possibility of RDR2 joining the Switch 2 lineup before 2025 ends.
With less than a month until the Switch 2's official launch, the console’s initial game catalog is starting to take shape—and it’s looking strong. Nintendo has already confirmed 23 upcoming titles, including major names like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Duskbloods from FromSoftware. Now, Rockstar’s critically acclaimed open-world western may be the next major addition.
Reports from anonymous sources close to Rockstar, shared by Gamereactor, claim that RDR2 will arrive on the Switch 2 sometime later in 2025. Spanish outlet Nintendúo echoed the same news, citing different sources, which adds weight to the claim. While there’s no exact release date yet, a 2025 window suggests the port could drop not long after the console launches. That would be a huge win for Nintendo fans—especially since the game is still breaking player records on Steam nearly seven years after its original release.
Next-Gen Upgrade Could Accompany the Switch 2 Port
The same source also hinted that Rockstar is preparing a “next-gen upgrade patch” for RDR2, bringing it up to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X standards. It’s unclear whether this patch will release alongside the Switch 2 port or at a later date, but either way, it would be an excellent opportunity to showcase the improved hardware. The Switch 2 reportedly features twice as many CPU cores and four times the memory bandwidth of its predecessor—potentially making it capable of running a graphically enhanced version of RDR2 far more smoothly than the original Switch ever could.
Cartridge Limitations Could Be a Roadblock
There is one notable caveat, even if the rumor turns out to be true. Massive AAA titles like Red Dead Redemption 2 often exceed 100 GB in size, far beyond the capacity of standard 64GB Switch cartridges. Even a scaled-down, lower-resolution version might not fit on a physical cartridge—meaning players may need to download most or all of the game digitally. This has already been the case with many third-party Switch releases, so while it wouldn’t be a shock, it could disappoint fans who prefer physical media.
For now, nothing is confirmed, but if the rumor pans out, Nintendo Switch 2 could be in for one of its most impressive ports yet.
