Fortnite’s Return to iOS Delayed Again: What’s Going On Between Epic Games and Apple?
Five Years of Absence from iOS
Fortnite has remained unavailable on iOS devices in the United States for nearly five years due to a long-standing conflict between Epic Games and Apple. The dispute began when Epic attempted to bypass Apple’s 30% fee on in-app purchases, prompting a legal battle. The court ultimately ruled in Epic’s favor, requiring Apple to eliminate its commission on those transactions.
Hope for a Comeback in May
On May 1, Epic Games founder Tim Sweeney shared that Fortnite was expected to return to iOS in the U.S. by the end of the following week. Then, on May 9, fans were encouraged further when Epic announced that Fortnite had been submitted to Apple for review — suggesting the launch might come even sooner.
However, things didn’t go as smoothly as expected. The app’s status remained unresolved far beyond Apple’s usual review timeframe, sparking confusion and concern among fans.
Epic Resubmits Fortnite After Long Silence
According to reputable Fortnite leaker ShiinaBR, Epic Games has now canceled the initial review request and resubmitted Fortnite to Apple. The newly submitted version reportedly includes a delayed update that was originally planned for release on May 15. This confirms that Fortnite will not be returning to iOS in the U.S. before May 16, at the earliest — the new release date for the patch.
Given that Epic waited more than five days before pulling the first submission, it’s very possible that this second review could take even longer.
When Will Fortnite Return to iOS in the U.S.?
No sooner than May 16.
ShiinaBR also noted in a previous post that 50% of apps are reviewed by Apple within 24 hours, and 90% within 48 hours. So it’s quite unusual that Fortnite’s review is taking this long. Many players speculate that the delay may be linked to the prior legal tensions between Epic and Apple. If Apple intends to block the game again, it will need to provide a valid reason.
Will There Be Any Rewards for Players?
Unfortunately, fans hoping to play Fortnite on iOS will have to wait a bit longer. But Epic has a history of rewarding player loyalty. When Fortnite returned to mobile platforms in other regions, Epic offered the free Katalina skin as a gift. A similar gesture wouldn’t be surprising if the game finally relaunches on iOS in the U.S.
