Roblox Players Frustrated Over High Cost of Username Changes

The Roblox community has come together to voice frustration over the price of changing usernames on the platform—and most agree it’s too expensive. Roblox, created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel, launched in 2006 and has since grown into a massive user-generated gaming platform with over 85 million daily active users. It operates through its own virtual currency, Robux.

A recent platform update has already stirred discussions. Roblox officially removed its Legacy Chat system, replacing it with a new TextChatService. This change raised concerns, especially from developers of admin-based games. The Roblox team clarified that the update was made to comply with parental controls and signaled that further adjustments could be expected in order to meet safety and legal standards.

The topic of username changes sparked debate after Reddit user AutomaticNecessary17 questioned the 1,000 Robux fee (around $12.50 USD) required to alter a username. One extreme case stood out: a user reportedly spent over 800,000 Robux—more than $10,000 USD—on changing their username multiple times. For comparison, Microsoft charges $10 to change a gamertag on Xbox, while Sony’s fee for PlayStation username changes is $9.99 or $4.99 for PS Plus members, showing that such fees are fairly standard across gaming platforms.

Why Does Roblox Charge So Much?

Commenters on Reddit offered a few explanations. One common theory is that the price helps preserve username exclusivity—since every Roblox account ID is unique and unchangeable, usernames function as valuable identifiers. Others argued more simply: Roblox is a business, and charging for features is just another way to generate revenue.

The username controversy isn’t the only naming issue Roblox users are puzzled by. There’s speculation that the platform may soon rename its “Friends” feature, which lets players connect and chat in-game.

Still, perhaps the most baffling case remains the player who changed their username 769 times, spending 769,000 Robux in total. While it’s understandable that users—especially younger ones—may want to update their usernames as they grow, doing so hundreds of times has left many scratching their heads.
