SNK’s Bold Move Merges Football and Fighting Games

The fighting game genre has seen some unexpected crossovers in recent years, but SNK’s latest announcement is making waves far beyond the gaming scene.

In September 2024, SNK dropped a teaser trailer hinting at Ronaldo’s involvement in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. At the time, most fans assumed he would serve as a celebrity ambassador for the game. However, the truth turned out to be far more game-changing.

Cristiano Ronaldo Becomes First Pro Athlete in a Mainline 2D Fighter

On March 25, 2025, SNK confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will be a fully playable fighter in South Town, complete with a unique moveset designed around his football skills. This marks the first time a major real-world athlete has been included in a mainline 2D fighting game—excluding LeBron James' appearance in the now-defunct Multiversus.

A reveal trailer showcased Ronaldo battling Fatal Fury veterans, pulling off soccer-inspired special moves, and even celebrating round victories with his iconic “Siuuu!” chant.

Fighting Game Community Reacts to Ronaldo’s Surprise Entry

The unexpected addition sent shockwaves through the fighting game community, with fans taking to social media to express their disbelief and excitement.

“I never thought I’d say this, but yeah… I main Cristiano Ronaldo in Fatal Fury.”

“This is like seeing Obama as a playable character in BlazBlue.”

Fighting Games Are Embracing Wild Crossovers

Fatal Fury is just the latest franchise to shake things up with an unexpected collaboration. Recently, Guilty Gear introduced its first-ever guest fighter in the form of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners’Lucy, while Street Fighter 6 revived a decades-old partnership with Fatal Fury icons Terry Bogard and Mai Shiranui.

With Ronaldo now stepping into the ring, fighting games may be entering a bold new era where anything is possible.
