The Witcher 4 Might Be a PS6 Game—And It’s Still Years Away
If you're eagerly awaiting CD Projekt Red’s next big RPG, The Witcher 4, be prepared for a long wait. The developer has confirmed that the earliest possible release for the highly anticipated sequel is 2027, raising the possibility that it could launch alongside—or even after—the PlayStation 6.
The Witcher 4 Timeline: From Announcement to Full Production
The Witcher 4 was first hinted at in October 2022, when CD Projekt unveiled its long-term roadmap, which included an entirely new Witcher trilogy following the critically acclaimed Witcher series (2007–2015). By March 2024, the sequel officially entered full production, and at The Game Awards in December 2024, CD Projekt released the first teaser trailer, featuring Ciri.
Now, it seems that trailer was just the beginning of a very long wait.
CD Projekt Confirms Witcher 4 Won’t Launch Before 2027
On March 25, 2025, during CD Projekt’s financial earnings call, the company provided a small but significant update. As reported by PC Gamer, a CDP representative stated:
“Even though we do not plan to release The Witcher 4 by the end of 2026, we are still driven by this financial goal.”
Later, in the Q&A session, CD Projekt declined to provide a precise release date, reinforcing that 2025 and 2026 are completely ruled out as possible launch windows.
At this point, the earliest we can expect The Witcher 4 is sometime in 2027—but even that isn't set in stone. If development faces further delays, the game could slip into 2028, as CD Projekt prioritizes avoiding crunch and overworking its developers.
Could The Witcher 4 Be a PlayStation 6 Title?
If The Witcher 4 doesn’t arrive until 2027 or later, there's a strong possibility that it will be released on the next generation of consoles. Windows Central previously reported that Microsoft is tentatively planning to launch its next-gen Xbox in 2027. Historically, PlayStation and Xbox have released their new consoles within the same timeframe, meaning the PS6 could also launch that year.
This suggests that The Witcher 4 could become one of the first major RPGs on the PS6, though it will likely be a cross-gen title, launching on both PS5 and PS6. Given the studio’s history with ambitious open-world RPGs, CD Projekt Red may push hardware capabilities even further—making The Witcher 4 a true next-gen experience.
