Since its PS3 debut in 2013, The Last of Us has remained one of PlayStation’s most iconic franchises, spawning a remaster, a sequel, a full remake, and a hit television adaptation. Despite its ongoing success, the series’ future now appears uncertain following a recent interview with Variety. Druckmann noted that the final seasons of HBO’s The Last of Us could mark the end of the franchise, though he has previously mentioned exploring ideas for a potential sequel.

The Last of Us' Future Remains Unclear

At present, Druckmann and Naughty Dog are focused on a new IP titled Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophecy, which was announced at The Game Awards last year. Additionally, Druckmann is overseeing the third and final season of HBO’s The Last of Us, with Season 2 set to premiere later this year.

Meanwhile, the latest franchise release, The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, did not introduce new narrative content, further fueling speculation that the story may have reached its conclusion. Naughty Dog had also planned to release a multiplayer spinoff inspired by the competitive mode from the original game, but the project was ultimately canceled, sparking backlash among fans.

For now, the fate of The Last of Us remains tied to the completion of the television series, which is expected to wrap up after three seasons on Max. Meanwhile, Naughty Dog appears to be shifting gears with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophecy, a project that signals a bold move into sci-fi storytelling. While the studio is undoubtedly busy, whether it will return to The Last of Us in the future remains to be seen.
