Epic Games Cracks Down on Fortnite Tournament Cheater

Epic Games has taken strong action against a Fortnite tournament player caught cheating during the Fortnite Championship Series (FNCS), forcing them to post a public apology video and donate their prize money to charity. The developer pursued legal action against Morgan Bamford, aka RepulseGod, after they fraudulently secured a spot in the FNCS 2023 Global Championship, which featured a $4 million prize pool.

The FNCS and Fortnite’s Competitive Scene

Originally released in 2017, Fortnite has evolved into a global gaming phenomenon, featuring multiple game modes such as Save the World, Creative, and LEGO Fortnite. FNCS remains one of the most prestigious esports tournaments, drawing top-tier players worldwide.

Meanwhile, Fortnite recently confirmed the end date of Chapter 6 Season 1 and the start of Season 2, giving players only a few days before the arrival of Lawless and the kickoff of 2025’s FNCS tournament, which began in January alongside Chapter 6’s launch.

Epic’s Response to Cheating

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Fortnite Competitive account addressed the incident, announcing that legal action had been taken against the player who unfairly qualified for FNCS.

As a result, the individual received a permanent ban from all Fortnite tournaments. This is not the first time Epic has sued a player for using software and hardware exploits to gain an unfair advantage. To further emphasize its stance, the company forced the disgraced player to release an apology video, revealing that they had shared their account with a friend, violating Fortnite’s competitive rules.

Fortnite’s Anti-Cheat Measures and Penalties

A 2024 study ranked Fortnitesecond among games with the best anti-cheat software, just behind Valorant. Other titles on the list included Rainbow Six Siege, Call of Duty: Warzone, and Overwatch 2. Epic continues to take cheating seriously, confirming that the banned player must also pay a monetary settlement, including their illegally won prize money, which will be donated to charity.
