Batman Returns to VR: 'Arkham Shadow' Set for Exclusive Meta Quest 3 Release in 2024!
Camouflaj, Oculus Studios, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, and DC have unveiled "Batman: Arkham Shadow", the latest installment in the acclaimed Arkham series, scheduled for exclusive release on the Meta Quest 3 in late 2024. This marks the series' second venture into virtual reality, following the 2016 release of "Batman: Arkham VR" by Rocksteady. That game, a launch title for the original PlayStation VR on PS4, was later expanded to other VR platforms. Although "Batman: Arkham VR" debuted after "Batman: Arkham Knight", it is set prior to the latter's events and revolves around Batman solving a murder. Despite mixed reviews, it was praised for its effective use of VR technology and compelling narrative.
The development of "Batman: Arkham Shadow" is being led by Oculus Studios and Camouflaj, known for their work on the "Iron Man VR" game. An official unveiling is set for June 7 at 2:00 PM PT during the Summer Game Fest, where more details will be provided. A teaser trailer released in advance suggests intriguing possibilities for the game, which will be exclusive to Meta Quest 3.
In the teaser, Batman navigates the shadowy alleys of Gotham City at night, encountering rats with glowing red eyes, suggesting the involvement of The Ratcatcher, or Otis Flannagan, a character not previously central to the Arkham series. The Ratcatcher, often referenced but rarely spotlighted, is presumed dead in the series timeline following "Arkham City" and before "Arkham Knight." Given this, and considering the narrative of "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League," it appears "Batman: Arkham Shadow" may also be set before "Arkham Knight," though its precise chronological placement remains unconfirmed until more details emerge at the upcoming Summer Game Fest.
