Sony has officially introduced a new gaming console model, the PS5 Slim, with the capability to connect a detachable disc drive

According to information provided by Sony, the new PS5 gaming console has been significantly reduced in size, shrinking by more than 30% in volume and by 18% and 24% in weight compared to the current model.

The release of the new version is scheduled for November in the United States, with subsequent rollouts in other countries in the following months. Both versions of the new console will come equipped with internal storage capacity of 1 TB.

The new design features four separate cover panels: the top portion has a glossy finish, while the bottom retains a matte texture.

The prices recommended for the new PS5 model are as follows:

• PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – $499.99/ €549.99/ £479.99
• PS5 Digital Edition – $449.99/ €449.99/ £389.99

Unlike previous versions, purchasers of the PS5 Digital Edition will have the option to buy a separate removable Blu-ray disc drive later at a price of $79.99/ €119.99/ £99.99.

The new version of PS5 will come with a horizontal stand included in the package. Additionally, there will be an option to purchase a separate vertical stand that is compatible with all PS5 models, priced at $29.99/ €29.99/ £24.99.

"To meet the evolving needs of gamers, our engineers and designers have collaborated on a new design," announced Sid Shuman from SIE. "This design offers more possibilities and flexibility."

"All the technological features that make the PS5 the best choice for gaming are retained in a more compact housing, including support for Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive and a 1TB SSD for additional internal storage."

After the current PS5 model's stock is depleted, the new version will become the only one available.

In July, it was announced that Sony had sold over 40 million PS5 consoles worldwide. The situation is somewhat different for the PS4; it also reached this milestone, but did so two months earlier. However, it's worth noting that the PS4 did not face the same supply difficulties caused by the pandemic that slowed down the sales growth of the PS5.

Sony plans to release 25 million PS5 consoles in the current fiscal year, ending in March 2024. If successful, this will set a new sales record for consoles, surpassing the 25-year-old record set by the original PlayStation, which sold 22.6 million units in 12 months.
