Sony has announced that Spider-Man 2 has set a new record as the fastest-selling game from PlayStation Studios in history
A message posted on the official PlayStation Twitter account revealed that the game "Spider-Man 2" managed to sell over 2.5 million copies within the first 24 hours of its release.
The tweet read: "Fantastic news for Spider-Man fans! Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has sold more than 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours. Thank you for your support and for making this launch a tremendous success!"
It's important to note that the mentioned number specifically refers to copies that were actually sold to end consumers, known as "sold through," as opposed to just being shipped to retailers.
Publishers sometimes announce the number of copies a game has been shipped, but this doesn't always reflect the actual sales because not every copy shipped to retailers gets purchased by consumers immediately.
The term "sold through" refers to the number of copies that were genuinely sold by retail stores or purchased digitally through the PlayStation Store, making it a more accurate indicator of how many games have been bought by players at this point.
The last time Sony declared a game as its "fastest-selling" at launch was in the case of God of War: Ragnarök, about which they claimed it had sold over 5.1 million copies within the first week (no data was provided for sales within the first 24 hours).
Prior to that, in June 2020, Sony announced that The Last of Us Part 2 had sold through more than 4 million copies in the first three days. Before that, the record was held by the first Spider-Man game from Insomniac, which sold 3.3 million copies in the first three days.
Spider-Man 2 was released on October 20 and received widespread critical acclaim, becoming one of the highest-rated games from Insomniac.
"It's an incredibly enjoyable game, fast-paced, and filled with heart. It takes the best of the Spider-Man universe and the best qualities of Insomniac's excellent gameplay sequences, possibly making it the best Marvel game ever," as stated in our review.
