Mortal Kombat 1 won't feature cross-play support at launch, and it's currently unclear whether the game will be available on personal computers at all

After the removal of information about cross-play support from the Mortal Kombat 1 Steam page at the beginning of this month, NetherRealm Studios confirmed that the game would be released without this feature.

On the official Twitter account of Mortal Kombat 1, it was announced: "The release is very close, and we look forward to everyone diving into the world of #MK1. As for cross-play, it won't be available right after launch, but know that we are diligently working on its implementation, and it will be added after the game's release."

The introduction of cross-play into Mortal Kombat 1 caused some confusion, to say the least. In May, a tweet from Wario64 indicated that the FAQ on the game's official website mentioned NetherRealm's plans to add cross-play and cross-progression support "post-launch," but this information was soon removed from the page.

Then, a "cross-play" tag was added to the Steam page for the game, raising hopes that cross-play would be available between PC and consoles, which was different from the previous installment, Mortal Kombat 11. However, this tag was also removed just a few days later, as noted on EventHubs.

It is currently unclear on which platforms cross-play will be implemented when NetherRealm ultimately decides on it. It would be disappointing if it were limited to support only PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as was the case with Mortal Kombat 11. Games like Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6 support cross-play between PC and consoles. Additionally, Tekken 8 plans to introduce cross-play upon its release in January, with closed testing already supporting cross-play between PC and PlayStation 5 in July.

Mortal Kombat 1 will be available in early access on September 14th for those who purchased the Premium Edition, with the full release scheduled for September 19th.
