In spite of the previous Valve events, the Boston Major will be played in single-elimination bo3 format. There will be no lower bracket and any team that losses in play-off, leaves the competition.

According to Valve announcement, 16 teams will be seeded to the play-off following the traditions of the previous major tournaments. As the group stage format is still unknown, it is hard to predict how the results of the teams will influence the seeding.

Previously, all The International tours starting from TI2 were hosted in Seattle. This is the first time when Valve decided to sponsor Major-tour in the U.S. since 2015 series of major events. Germany, China, and the Philippines hosted the previous official major tours. PGL who previously worked on The Manila Major will be responsible for the production part of this event.
