Starcloud Plans to Launch Orbital Bitcoin Mining This Year
Starcloud, an American startup specializing in orbital data centers, has announced plans to launch the first-ever $BTC mining in space. According to information from the company's CEOPhilip Johnston, this will happen this year on the Starcloud-2 satellite.
Starcloud already has experience working in space: in November 2025, they launched Starcloud-1 with Nvidia H100 GPUs on board, demonstrating the possibility of computations in orbit. Now the company has filed an application with the FCC for the deployment of 88,000 satellites to create a massive orbital network. Starcloud-2, whose launch is scheduled for the end of 2026, will have a cluster of GPUs and specialized ASIC chips for Bitcoin mining, allowing it to become the first to "mine a coin in space."
The advantages of this approach are obvious and revolutionary. Solar panels will provide an almost constant source of energy without dependence on earthly grids, making mining up to 10 times cheaper in terms of energy costs. Cooling through the vacuum of space is natural and efficient, without the need for expensive systems on Earth. In addition, the absence of regulators and restrictions on energy consumption, typical for earthly jurisdictions, will allow avoiding bureaucracy and environmental restrictions. As Johnston noted, Bitcoin mining currently consumes about 20 GW of energy constantly, and ultimately, the entire process will move to space, where solar energy is cheap and unlimited.
But not everything is so simple. The economics of orbital mining is still shaky: ASIC chips become obsolete quickly, and launch costs can be high. Johnston acknowledges that profitability can drop rapidly with the appearance of new equipment models. Besides Starcloud, similar projects are being developed by Intercosmic Energy, adding competition to this new "space race."
This news, published in an interview on the HyperChange YouTube channel and confirmed in posts on X, is sparking lively discussions in the crypto community. Will space become the new frontier for Bitcoin? If Starcloud succeeds in implementing its plans, it could solve the energy dilemma of mining and open the way for other cryptocurrencies.
